At least 30 fans watching last night's Anderlecht vs Manchester United match in a "football viewing centre" in Nigeria have lost their lives. It occurred in Calabar when a high-tension cable, with live electricity running along it, broke its mooring and fell onto the area where the fans were watching the match.

Football viewing centres are common in Nigeria where cable television isn't as easily accessed as it is in homes throughout the UK and it's often the only way for fans to watch live matches.

They were watching the live quarter final match between Anderlecht and Manchester United, which United went on to win 3-2 on aggregate.

News like this is awfully sad, no one should lose their life watching the sport we all love. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and to the people who lost their lives last night.
